Cotswolds Without A Car

The Cotswolds are famous for their rollings hills, quaint villages and idyllic scenery - but if you don't have a car you might think you're not able to make the most of a trip here. The Cotswolds are far more accessible than you might think, and lots of guests visit us on a car-free stay. Here's our travel guide on enjoying the Cotswolds without being reliant on a car.

Getting Around Without A Car

Arriving by train:​

  • Moreton in Marsh - arrive into Moreton in Marsh direct from London Paddington and be straight into the heart of a Cotswolds market town. This is a great place to base yourself without a car as everything you could need is within walking distance.

  • Kingham - arriving into Kingham station you are closer to Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water.

  • Cheltenham Spa - if you want to combine your Cotswolds trip with the Regency town you could arrive into Cheltenham Spa and then take the 801 bus to Bourton on the Water.

Travelling by bus:​

Pulham's Bus Company operates buses around the Cotswolds, from larger towns like Moreton in Marsh to little villages. 

  • 801: Chipping Norton - Moreton-in-Marsh - Bourton-on-the-Water - Andoversford - Cheltenham

  • 803: Bourton on the Water - Upper Oddington - Longborough - Moreton in Marsh

  • 855: Bourton-on-the-Water - Northleach - Bibury - Cirencester

  • X52: Cheltenham - Andoversford - Northleach - Burford - Witney - Oxford

Walking and Cycling

If you want to walk or cycle in the Cotswolds then basing yourself in a town or village gives you the option of lots of different routes from your door.

Day Trips

Use the local bus services to easily access popular Cotswold towns and villages like Bibury, Cirencester, Burford and Chipping Norton from Moreton in Marsh and Bourton on the Water.

The Cotswolds has lots of amazing places to eat and drink, and staying in a major town or village gives you lots of options for dining every night of your stay. Moreton in Marsh, Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water all have lots of variety of pubs, restaurants and cafes, and from Bourton on the Water you can walk to Jeremy Clarkson's brewery, Hawkstone Brewery.
